The need
Most people at some point of their life will look after a loved one who is disabled, ill or frail. It may be you or one of your family members, your friends or your colleagues. Together there are six million carers in the UK making a contribution to society valued at £87 billion.
Every day 6,000 people begin caring. It can come as a shock to find out just how little support is available when you are up half the night putting someone with dementia back to bed, struggling to find alternative care so you can get to work or lifting your husband with mobility problems out of a chair. Not surprisingly caring can take its toll on your health, finances and work and leave you feeling isolated.
Carers UK is here to transform carers' lives. We want society to appreciate the contribution carers make, far outstripping the NHS and ensure carers get the pratical support when they need it and the financial support so that caring does not mean a life in poverty.
An ageing population is just one of the reasons why the number of carers is set to soar by three million in 30 years, making caring one of the biggest challenges facing society in the 21st century. Carers UK is making sure that decision-makers understand these challenges and helping to find the solutions to better support carers.
"I am so pleased to have found Carers UK. Sometimes I feel so alone, even though I have lots of friends and relations around. They just can't understand what it's like."
Our work
As an organisation of carers we give carers a voice. Putting carers at the heart of all our work gives us knowledge and expertise about how to provide better support for carers.
- We work with government and policy makers to put in place the changes that will make a real difference to carers' lives.
- We provide carers with free information through our helpline, CarersLine, our publications and website, helping them make decisions through this dmanding period of their life. Every year more and more people need our support. You can help us be there for one of them.
- We provide cares with support through our network of branches and online forum.
By forming a corporate partnership with Carers UK at this crucial time you can make a significant impact on our work and help us transform support and help more families looking after loved ones.
