There have been three Acts of Parliament specifically for carers: 

The Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995 for the first time, gave carers the right to an assessment of their own needs.

The Carers and Disabled Children Act 2000 extended the right to assessment for adults and extended the right to 16 and 17 year old young people as well as parents of disabled children.

The Carers (Equal Opportunities) Act 2004.  For details of the provisions of this Act, click here
