One of the 5 main aims of Carers UK and Carers Wales is to work in partnership and collaboration with other organisations to the benefit of carers.

MS Carers Network Wales is a one-to-one telephone/email befriending service aimed at isolated carers of people with MS across Wales.  This innovative new service has benefited from a Big Lottery Fund grant of £58,400.  Isolated carers will be offered a series of regular calls/emails from a matched carer volunteer who can offer support, friendship and advice.

We know that it can be difficult for those in the more rural parts of Wales to reach support services, and vice versa.  If we consider the fact that many carers are restricted to the home due to their caring responsibilities, it soon becomes clear why so many carers feel isolated or alone.  Recent research  has also shown that as caring responsibilities increase, social support networks decrease.

MS Carers Network Wales will use sensitive referral and matching processes to link carers with trained volunteers who will all be experienced carers or past carers themselves.  The volunteer befrienders will aim to offer support and a ‘listening ear’, as well as signposting carers to relevant support services, if needed.  To help them in this role we have published a Carers Directory, listing support services across Wales.

MS Carers Network Wales forms part of MS Cymru’s overall strategy to
increase its support for all people affected by MS in Wales, and is the
result of a partnership between MS Cymru and Carers Wales.
